Recently we had a call from Jerry D, who recently reside in Broomfield, CO at the brand new community of "The Enclave at Broadlands".

When he moved in, Jerry was told by the sales persons of the builder that as soon as he insert his key to the deadbolt, the master key of the builder is automatically erased.

Master key, for those who never heard of it, is a key used widely by contractors and property managers to control systems of many locks, while each lock still works on its own separate key.

Technically, there is no way for the regular key to erase the master key for these residential locks without having a locksmith rekey the lock and remover the master pins previously installed the very same way.

When Jerry called us he wanted to upgrade the locks just for the front door, since he had no idea that each and every contractor, worker or manager of the project has the new home keys (actually the keys to the whole neighborhood...)

Google "bump key" and you will find information about how to make these keys and use them. You will even find sites where anyone can buy pre-cut sets of bump keys in several common key ways. In our opinion, the risk factor is very high with this technique because it works on a high percentage of locks (residential and commercial) and it only takes a minute to learn and cut a key. Locks that are especially vulnerable are master-keyed cylinders.

There are approximately 10 common keyways that the crooks want bump keys for. Keyways are the grooves in the key and in the lock that allow for key insertion. In order for a bump key to work in your lock, the keyway must match. It stands to reason that criminals want bump keys that will work in as many locks as possible. They order and make sets of these bump keys in the most common keyways for this reason.
